Common Household Electrical Problems

Lights:

What’s the problem? My light bulbs keep burning out.

There could be a number of causes for this. They could be quite involved, such as a number of poor connections that would need require a qualified electrician to check and possible replace parts of your houses wiring, to the very simple –you may just be using a type of bulb that is unsuitable for your current circuit. A quick visit from a qualified electrician will give you the answer.

What’s the problem? Some lights are bright, but some are dim.

This is probably a bad main neutral connection. Left unresolved this can lead to popping and exploding light bulbs as well as damage to anything plugged into the mains. This should be addressed quickly by an electrician.

Switches:

What’s the problem? Some of my switches are getting warm to the touch

This is nothing to worry about and quite normal on dimmer switches that are using bulbs of 600 watts or less. However, if you start noticing heat at the receptacle, this could be a much larger problem and potentially dangerous. You should contact an electrician immediately.

What’s the problem? This switch doesn’t do anything.

This often happens when either the house had been lived in before or some rewiring has just taken place. Often in these cases, switches are made redundant but kept to avoid an unsightly hole in the wall. By getting an additional light fitting or socket, these switches can be used again, but it is only an aesthetic problem and not dangerous.

Breakers:

What’s the problem? My circuit breaker tripped but won’t reset.

There are two possible causes. One, the breaker is faulty, in which case it will need to be replaced. The other, the breaker is working well and the fault that caused it to trip is still active. In this case, we recommend getting a qualified electrician to come over and identify and fix the fault.

What’s the problem? Everytime I switch on my microwave / hairdryer, the breaker trips.

Unfortunately, this is most likely caused by the fact that these appliances run off high wattage than your current circuit can provide. Often you can set these kinds of appliances to a low wattage setting, but if not, or if that doesn’t work, then the only solution is to create a second ‘heavy duty’ circuit for these appliances. Give us a call and we’ll quote you for it. It costs less than you may think.
